I’m not really sure why I’m doing this. Writing, that is. Probably the thing driving me is the relative weirdness of what I’ve been doing for the past 137 days.
Today is day 138 of a particular way of eating (WoE) that if you’d asked me about six months ago, I would have said “It’s NUTS”. For the record, I still think it’s a bit nuts, but that’s okay.
Starting December 11, 2017, I have been following what many refer to as a “Zero Carb” (ZC) way of eating. This WoE is pretty simple. Eat meat, drink water.
Yeah. I’m a carnivore 🙂
Seriously. It’s weird to not eat vegetables, pasta, bread, rice, or any number of things that don’t come from animal products. This ZC WoE really is that simple. Eat meat, drink water.
That’s as simple as it can get. If you want to be more complicated, that’s fine: just eat foods that are animal products. Some people handle various forms of dairy well. Think butter, cheese, whipping cream. Those are fine as condiments or ingredients, but the main focus of every meal is meat. Some people drink tea and coffee, but that’s a personal choice. If it works for them, it’s okay. If not, eliminate it from your diet and keep things simple.
I’ve read enough to convince myself that this WoE won’t kill me. In fact, what I’ve read suggests I will probably improve my health. One of my daughter’s school friends asked if I had contracted scurvy after a couple of months. It’s safe to say that I haven’t, and I haven’t had any other major negative health impacts either.
Benefits so far include:
- Around 10 lbs of weight loss
- Chronic Achilles tendon injury disappeared
- Elbow pain disappeared
- Complete loss of carb cravings
- Some improvement overall in mental clarity
- Cleaner teeth
- Improved bowel movements
- I get to eat bacon regularly 🙂
It’s late, so I’m heading off to sleep. That’s been going well too. Sleeping, that is. I’m probably going to keep writing about this. Documenting what I eat. Outlining some of the things I’ve learned and from where. Who knows where this will go. I don’t, but I think it’ll be worth taking notes. Enjoy the read.
